THOMPSON PUBLIC SCHOOLS MEDICATION POLICY

REGULATIONS FOR THE ADMINISTRATION OF MEDICATIONS

No medicines, prescription and/or over the counter, may be brought to school including field trips and team sporting events without written parent/guardian authorization and written physicians authorization. New authorizations are needed for each new school year. An adult must bring any medications to the nurses office. This is a Thompson Board of Education Policy and per the State of Connecticut School Health Service. Authorization forms may be obtained from a nurse to be completed by a physician or a physician may fax any written authorization to the nurse. Faxes received from a physician will then be sent home for a parent signature and a parent must bring the medication to the nurse. Medication authorization forms will soon be available for downloading from the school health website. Students requiring emergency medications (Epi-Pens for severe allergies, inhalers as rescue breathers, and insulin), may carry and self administer these medications once the proper authorizations are on file and each student has met with a nurse to review responsibilities of carrying and self-administration. These medications must be carried by the student and must be on their person at all times. Under no circumstances should emergency medications be shared or left in gym bags, backpacks, or lockers. Daily, and as needed, medication must be stored and administrated in the nurse office. Students may certainly have the medications that are necessary however we must follow the regulation and law. Disciplinary actions are necessary when students are non compliant with the policy. The student handbook clearly states (under the Alcohol, Drugs & Tobacco Policy) the ramifications of violating the policy and procedure of medication administration. Students will only be allowed cough drops dispensed from the nurse's office. If your child needs cough drops he/she must go to the nurse and remain in the nurse's office while having the cough drop. Permission notes are not necessary for a child to receive a cough drop from the nurse's office. For the safety of your child and others do not send cough drops, lozenges, and/or hard candy to school with your child.
